Here comes the sun UAB.

This week, UAB announced that it is home to the largest solar energy system in the city of Birmingham.  The solar panels are on top of it’s Campus Recreation Center which can be seen from Red Mountain and surrounding buildings.

The 100 panel solar system was installed by Birmingham-based Vulcan Solar Power.

“This is our first commercial-scale solar installation,” said Julie Price, UAB Sustainability Coordinator in a recent UAB news release.

“The visibility of the system cultivates a recognition and inquiry from the community that aligns directly with our mission to generate public engagement. It is a great pinnacle project that will open the door for us to engage people about solar energy and other facets of sustainability as well.”

On a hot and cloudy day on the roof of UAB’s Campus Recreation Center, row upon row of solar panels are taking in the light. At just three stories, the roof and its new accessories can be seen from adjacent buildings in every direction.

“If you’re standing here and you look around 360 degrees people can see the system,” UAB’s sustainability coordinator, Julie Price, says that was intentional. “And I think that’s the first step to our mission as a sustainability program is public engagement.”

Vulcan Solar Power has secured a contract with the University of Alabama at Birmingham to build the school's first commercial-scale solar installation.

More than 100 solar panels will go on the roof of UAB's Campus Recreation Center as part of the $120,000 contract. Work is expected to begin in mid June and construction will take no longer than two weeks.

“We are excited to be a part of Alabama’s renewable energy community and are honored to be chosen to install UAB’s first commercial-size rooftop solar system,” said Rob Ozols, CEO of Vulcan Solar. “Our mission is to provide Alabamians with reliable and affordable solar energy while also helping Alabama join in on the explosive job-growth that is taking place in the solar industry across the country. And what better way to kick-start all of this than by partnering with UAB on this ground-breaking project.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Birmingham, AL (April 18, 2016)

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) selected Birmingham's own Vulcan Solar Power, LLC to install a rooftop solar photovoltaic system on the UAB Campus Recreation Center.

Vulcan Solar Power is a solar installation company based out of Birmingham, AL. Leading the UAB installation is Vulcan Solar’s Senior Operations Manager, Steve Furze. Certified as a PV Installation Professional at the highest national level by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP), Furze has completed hundreds of residential and commercial solar projects throughout the gulf-south region.

VULCAN SOLAR POWER, LLC:

Vulcan Solar provides turnkey solar installations for residential, commercial, and non-profit projects. Vulcan Solar handles all aspects of solar installations, from the free consultation, site survey, and quote to project completion and maintenance.

“Vulcan Solar is dedicated to helping build a robust solar industry here in Birmingham and throughout Alabama,” said Ozols. “We want to help Alabamians capture the substantial federal tax credits for solar as well as create new jobs in Alabama. Outside of Alabama, solar jobs are growing at a rate nine times faster than the rest of the economy, and by not taking advantage of all the tax benefits and federal funding available, we are subsidizing the solar industry in neighboring states and throughout the country. The same goes for the Alabama University System’s world-class programs in renewable energy – we are training some of the best renewable energy engineers and businessmen and women in the country, but until we create our own home-grown solar industry here in Alabama, unfortunately most of those students will have to look to neighboring states for work.”

With solar being more reliable and affordable today than ever, Vulcan Solar hopes that more Alabamians start thinking more about solar for their homes and businesses. For more information, please visit us at VulcanSolarPower.com or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/VSPSolar/.

Brought together by business and then brought closer by friendship, Sam Yates and Rob Ozols have formed a company that may help change the way Alabamians power their lives.

With backgrounds in engineering and law, Yates and Ozols are using skills from previous careers to pursue a passion for user-friendly energy sources.

Yates and Ozols founded Vulcan Solar Power in 2015 after seeing a need in the greater Birmingham area for easy-to-use residential and commercial solar power systems. The company has obtained all its required licenses, and Yates and Ozols said they are excited to start working with a long list of homeowners and businesses interested in solar power.

“It isn’t just for ‘greenies,’ there is commercially good payback on a system,” said Ozols, the company’s chief executive officer.
